History

The Founders

OPEN was founded in January 2012 by Gerard Vroomen and Andy Kessler, both of whom brought deep industry experience. Gerard had co-founded Cervélo, building it into a brand that won the Tour de France, the UCI World Championships, Ironman Hawaii, and the Olympic road race. Andy had run BMC Switzerland for seven years before joining Cervélo as international sales director. Together, they possessed an unusual combination of engineering vision and commercial acumen.

A Deliberate Beginning

The company debuted with a single model, the O-1.0, and a clear mandate: work hard to stay small. From the outset, OPEN eschewed professional team sponsorships, large marketing budgets, and the relentless model-year churn that characterises much of the bicycle industry. Instead, the founders focused on creating a small number of exceptionally well-designed framesets, refining each one over time rather than replacing it annually.

Defining Gravel

OPEN became one of the defining brands of the gravel cycling movement, producing frames that bridged the gap between road racing performance and off-road capability. The engineering rigour that Vroomen and Kessler brought from their previous ventures was evident in every detail—from frame geometry and carbon layup to dropout design and cable routing. OPEN framesets became reference points for what a modern gravel bike could be, earning a reputation for exceptional ride quality and versatility.
