Description

Ritchey Design is an American bicycle component and frame manufacturer founded by Tom Ritchey, one of the most influential figures in the history of cycling. Based in Redwood City, California, the company produces road, gravel, and mountain bike frames alongside a comprehensive range of components—handlebars, stems, seatposts, wheels, and forks—all bearing the hallmarks of Ritchey’s engineering philosophy: light weight, elegant simplicity, and uncompromising function. The brand is synonymous with precision craftsmanship and an enduring commitment to steel as a premier frame material, even as the industry shifted toward carbon fibre and aluminium.

History

The Pioneer

Tom Ritchey is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of mountain biking. In the mid-1970s, as a teenager in Northern California, he was already building frames and racing at the highest level. Alongside Gary Fisher, Charlie Kelly, and Joe Breeze, Ritchey was instrumental in transforming the improvised off-road riding of Marin County’s Mount Tamalpais into the sport of mountain biking. His framebuilding skills were central to the movement—he built the frames that Gary Fisher sold under the MountainBikes brand, effectively producing the first commercially available mountain bikes.

Founding Ritchey Design

Tom Ritchey formally established Ritchey Design in 1974, initially building road racing frames by hand. As mountain biking exploded in popularity through the 1980s, Ritchey became one of the most sought-after framebuilders in the world. His frames were prized for their precise TIG welding, carefully selected tubing, and race-proven geometry. The company expanded into components, applying the same meticulous engineering to bars, stems, seatposts, and pedals.

The Logic Tubing Legacy

One of Ritchey’s most significant contributions to cycling is the development of Ritchey Logic tubing—proprietary heat-treated, triple-butted steel tubing designed to deliver exceptional strength and ride quality at minimal weight. Logic tubing became the foundation of Ritchey’s steel frames and set a standard for steel frame construction that endures to this day. The SwissCross, built with Logic steel, is among the most celebrated cyclocross frames ever produced.

Global Influence

From a small workshop in Northern California, Ritchey Design grew into a globally recognised brand whose components are found on bikes at every level, from weekend riders to professional racers. Tom Ritchey’s personal involvement in design and testing remains a defining characteristic of the company, and his frames—particularly the steel models—are regarded by many as the finest expression of the craft.
