Description
Stelbel is an Italian custom bicycle brand renowned for its mastery of TIG welding and its deep roots in both aeronautical engineering and artisan frame building. Founded in 1973 by Stelio Belletti, Stelbel holds a unique place in cycling history as the first frame builder to employ TIG welding in bicycle construction—a technique Belletti brought from his family’s aerospace workshop, anticipating the mainstream bicycle industry by more than a decade. Today, Stelbel continues to design and handcraft high-end steel and titanium bicycles from Italy, honouring its founder’s legacy of precision, innovation, and craftsmanship.
History
Aeronautical Roots
Stelio Belletti and his father, Antenore, were experts in chassis construction and TIG welding, skills honed through their work servicing civil and military aeronautics from a family workshop in Italy. In the early 1970s, Stelio recognised that the precision welding techniques used in aerospace could be applied to bicycle frame construction with transformative results.
Founding and Innovation
In spring 1973, Stelio Belletti founded Stelbel and became the first frame builder to use TIG welding for bicycle frames—a revolutionary step that produced cleaner, stronger, and more precise joints than the traditional brazing methods used by Italian contemporaries. Stelbel was one of the first companies in Italy to own and operate a TIG welding machine, and Belletti quickly became the foremost exponent of this technique in the cycling world.
Racing Success
The quality of Stelbel frames was validated at the highest level of competition. Most notably, the Polish national cycling team, racing on Stelbel frames built by Belletti, won the gold medal in the team time trial at the 1975 UCI World Road Championships. Encouraged by these results, Belletti devoted himself entirely to building racing bicycle frames, abandoning all other work.
Closure and Revival
The original Stelbel workshop closed its doors in 1990. However, the brand was revived in 2013 through a collaboration between Cicli Corsa and Stelio Belletti himself, bringing the Stelbel name back to life. The revived Stelbel continues the tradition of designing and handcrafting bespoke steel and titanium frames, blending the founder’s original techniques with contemporary design and materials.
